Have you checked out the Handmade Couture series over on the Emmaline Bags blog? In this series we take designer bags (that have a designer price tag to boot) and show you how to recreate the look using existing sewing patterns, materials and emmaline hardware to get the same luxe look at a fraction of the cost. This week, we show you how to recreate this Kate Spade bag using the Blue Calla Boronia Bowler Bag

For all of our U.K. Bagineers and worldly adventurers, there are still a few spots open for the Bag Retreat brought to you by Sewing Patterns by Mrs. H. Read all about this dreamy getaway and get your tickets here.

Want to get a jump start on some back to school sewing? Come join me as I do a sewalong for the Emmaline Bags Luxie Lunch bag, here on this blog starting July 24th. As a bonus, those sewing along with us on and sharing their makes will be entered to win one of 3 Emmaline Bags gift cards. Click here for the schedule and more info.

Have you seen the Sew Sweetness Sewcial Sundays? Each Sunday, she does a live video to give you the lowdown on the latest sewing tools, fabric releases and some tips! This week she shows you how to sew an adjustable strap.

Curious about using strap anchors in your bags? These are one of my favorite pieces of hardware, and they are so much quicker (and professional) than finicky strap tabs. Check out the tutorial for how to add the top edge style to your next bag.

If you are a blogger, a shop or a designer I’d love to include your sales, pattern releases and special projects. Email me at Cyndi_mf@hotmail.com with your info and upcoming or current sales, patterns and projects to be included in upcoming posts.

Luxie Lunch Bag Sew A Long

Summer is in FULL swing, but back to school will be here before we know it! I know my list of projects for back to school is quickly growing, but at the top of the list is a new lunch bag for my soon to be third grader. After sewing up the Luxie, I don't know if I ever want to make or use a different lunch bag. I can easily fit my food containers without having to shove them in sideways, and the front zip pocket is perfect for stashing utensils or a couple bags of tea for later. Have I sold you on needing this pattern yet? Well, if you needed anymore convincing, it's the perfect for summer BYOB parties as Sincerely Jen shows you with her fab Luxie:

I will be be hosting a sewalong here on this blog from July 24-July 28th so you have plenty of time to order your supplies and pick your fabrics.

Here's what you will need:

1/2 Yard exterior Fabric
1/2 Yard exterior accent fabric
1/2 Yard lining fabric (PUL or some type of water restant fabric such as rip stop nylon or laminate is HIGHLY recommended...you don't want something in your lunch bag spilling and ruining your pretty bag.)1
1/2 Yard Insulated fleece such as Isulbrite
10" x 21.5" Foam Stabilizer
1.25 Yard of piping, premade or make your own
22" or longer bag zipper...double pull is what I used.
9" zipper
3/4 Yard of woven interfacing

Although this sewalong will run from July 24-28th, these posts will remain up to refer to, so no worries if you can't join up! I'd love to see your Luxie that you create, please share your finished bag!

Here's the Schedule:

July 24th: Cutting and prepping your fabrics
July 25th: Making piping and prepping zippers
July 26th:Assembling zipper pocket
July 27th: Handles and constructing exterior
July 28th: Making lining and putting it all together

I hope you'll join us!

Don't forget to share your photos to the Emmaline Facebook group, or on Instagram with the hashtag #Luxiesewalong! I'd love to see your progress shots and as a bonus, those who share their completed Luxie using the hashtags by July 31st will be entered to win one of three Emmaline Bags Gift cards! You could win a 10, 15 or even a 20 dollar gift card to Emmaline Bags (think of all the bling!).

To get notifications for the sewalong, you can join the Facebook event I created here

the Bag Buzz 7/1/17

Happy Canada Day!
Here's what’s abuzz in the world of bags:

Sales:

Blue Calla Patterns is having a Canada sale! Today, you can get 25% off all patterns using code: CANADADAY

30% of ALL fabrics while supplies last at Llama Fabrics with code LLAMA30

Happy Okapi has put together a FANTASTIC round up of Canada sales on her blog, including pattern and fabric sales.

Quilter's Square is taking HALF OFF of all Cotton and Steel through today. Use code: halfoff

New products:

Sew Sweetness just added several new colors of faux leather
in her shop. It's much thinner than traditional faux leathers and marine vinyls, making it ideal for sewing bags on a domestic machine without compromising on quality and durability.

Have you seen the price of Shape flex sky rocket lately? I have to wonder what the reason behind this huge spike is (15 yards went from 40 USD to 107 USD at Walmart the past few weeks). There are some viable alternatives out there that are a bit less pricey. One such that I have used is the fashion fuse from Wawak. It's a similar product and it may be a bit more cost effective until the prices sort themselves out. There's also been a lot of buzz about gotinterfacing.com which also claims to have a similar product at a much better price.

Other News:

Liz from Moments design is having an event to celebrate Canada's 150th Birthday in her Facebook group with 4 days of giveaways from 20 different bag designers. Each day 5 patterns will be given away. Go join up to enter to win.
